This page describes how the current Steady Chess beta handles information. Updated September 9, 2026.
The short version
Your practice history, imported games, and notes are saved in this browser. The beta does not offer account signup or cloud progress sync. Game analysis runs on your device. Endgame checks send the current chess position to an external tablebase service.
What stays on your device
We use browser local storage for guided-puzzle and lesson completion, placement answers and estimates, practice history, imported PGNs, game notes, assignments, endgame attempts, and your light or dark theme preference. Importing a game or restoring a backup reads that file in your browser; it does not upload the file to an application database.
These records remain until you replace or remove them, or your browser clears its storage. Different devices, browser profiles, and website addresses have separate storage. Private browsing may remove records when you close the session.
What leaves your device
- Website requests. Our hosting infrastructure receives requests to serve the website, chess-engine files, and other assets. Cloudflare processes technical connection information, which may include IP addresses, request URLs, and browser information, to deliver and protect the service. Operational logs may be used to investigate failures. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
- Endgame checks. Opening and playing a practical endgame sends its board position in FEN notation to
tablebase.lichess.ovh. The service also receives normal connection information such as your IP address. The request does not include your notes, full game file, or placement history. See Lichess’s privacy policy.
During private previews, the platform hosting that preview may also require sign-in and process access information under its own privacy policy. That access account is separate from your locally saved chess progress.
Analytics, ads, and Google Search
The application does not currently include advertising, session replay, or an analytics tracking script. Google Search Console helps us understand how public pages appear in search; verifying the domain does not install a Google Analytics script in the app. Hosting infrastructure can still process operational traffic data.
Your choices
- Download a complete backup from Progress to keep or move your work.
- Clear the website’s site data in your browser to remove local records. Delete downloaded backups separately.
- Use lessons, guided puzzles, and local game analysis without opening the external endgame checker.
- Choose what you include in an imported PGN or support message. PGNs can contain player names and other personal details.
We cannot recover deleted local progress without a backup, or read and delete records stored only in your browser on your behalf.
Changes to this page
If the website adds accounts, cloud sync, or new tracking features, this page will be updated to explain the changed behavior before those features are enabled.
